Bang Bang Chicken: The Easy, High Protein Dinner That Tastes Like a Takeaway

There are some meals that instantly become part of the weekly rotation, and this Bang Bang Chicken is one of them. It’s creamy, sweet, spicy, packed with flavour and honestly tastes like something you’d order as a Friday night treat — except it’s ridiculously easy to make at home.

The sauce is the star here: a dreamy mix of mayo, sweet chilli and a little kick of spice that coats crispy chicken perfectly. Pair it with rice, noodles or even throw it into wraps if you’re juggling kids, work and life and need something quick that still feels like a proper meal.

The best part? It takes around 30 minutes and feels like you’ve put in far more effort than you actually have.

Ingredients

For the chicken:

  • 3 chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 100g cornflour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 100g panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper
  • Spray oil or cooking oil

For the Bang Bang sauce:

  • 120g mayonnaise
  • 60ml sweet chilli sauce
  • 1 tbsp sriracha (more if you like heat)
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • Juice of half a lime

To serve:

  • Rice or noodles
  • Spring onions, sliced
  • Sesame seeds
  • Cucumber ribbons or steamed greens

Method

Step 1: Prep the chicken

Season the chicken pieces with salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Coat each piece in cornflour, dip into beaten egg and then into the panko breadcrumbs.

This gives that lovely crispy coating that makes the dish.

Step 2: Cook

Grill – The Morphy Richard’s Table Top Grill if you’re after extra crispiness. Here’s the link to the grill I have and recommend- https://tidd.ly/4dtaPXv

Air fryer method:

Cook at 200°C for around 12–15 minutes, turning halfway through.

Oven method:

Bake at 220°C for 20–25 minutes until golden and cooked through.

Step 3: Make the sauce

While the chicken cooks, whisk together:

  • Mayo
  • Sweet chilli sauce
  • Sriracha
  • Honey
  • Lime juice

Taste and adjust depending on how spicy you like it.

Step 4: Assemble

Toss the crispy chicken through the sauce or drizzle it over the top if you want to keep the coating crunchy.

Serve over fluffy rice and finish with spring onions and sesame seeds.

Why you’ll make this again

  • Tastes like a fakeaway treat
  • Ready in around half an hour
  • Kid-friendly (just reduce the spice)
  • Air fryer approved
  • Works for meal prep too

This is one of those recipes that disappears very quickly in our house. Slightly messy, full of flavour and definitely one worth saving.

If you make it, prepare for everyone to ask for it again next week.
